Baradwaja was one of the original seven rishis (Saptarishi) and his story is uique because of his birth and subsequent adoption by a rishi who taught him mediation which he did to excess, desiring to know everything there is to know about the vedas.
Eventually he became the student of Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana. His son, Drona played a pivotal role in the Mahabharata as teacher of both the Pandava and Kaurava princes when they were young. Later on, in the battle of Kurukshetra, he comes close to defeating the Pandavas, except for a lie told by Yudhisthira, instigated by Krishna.
