North India temple style

In my 6 trips to India, I have only visited the south (Tamil Nadu) where the typical temple looks like the following; tall walls painted in red and white striped, a tall gate structure (called a gopuram) and smaller generally individual temples (called mandirs) within the walls as seen in the photo below.

When we had the opportunity to have priests from Varanasi join the puja.net yagya series, I was interested to see that the style of temple architecture was so dramatically different. The tops of the temples were tall and pointed with wonderfully intricate carving and details.

The temples themselves are laid out differently, with lighter colors and more open areas.
