Shiva Yagya – Sankalpam

India 008

At the beginning of any yagya, time is taken to recognize the contributions of those who make the yagya possible. In sanskrit this is called “sankalpam” or statement of purpose.

Essentially it is a process through which the names of the sponsors, their family members, and astrological details are read into the “cosmic record”.

The lengthy mantra goes into great detail, but essentially is saying that “in this time, and in this place, these pujas and yagyas were performed for the benefit of these people and their family members”.

Because of the international nature of the participants, sponsor names can be a considerable challenge for the priests, so they perform the puja and then pause so that I can read the list of participants.

A puja completes the process.
