Veda Vyasa was the saint/rishi who divided the Vedas into four parts so that they could be useful the in lesser periods of time called yugas.  He also was the author of the Bhagavad Gita and Mahabharata.

Prior to Vyasa, the knowledge of the Vedas was passed down only from father to son.  He is creditied as the the one who created the possibility of a Guru who teaches those who wish to learn.  He is shown here at the conclusion of our Guru Poornima yagya.
